ABSTRACT

Hypericin is throught to be a promising material in cancer treatment. It is natural sensitizer extracted from Hypericum perforatum plant and used for the cancer treatment studies with photodynamic therapy. In this study, we aimed to search genotoxic effect of hypericin in the darkness peripheral blood samples were obtained from ten (5 Male and 5 Female) healthy volunteers. Sister Chromatid Exchange (SCE) procerdure were performed for two groups and low dose (5 μM/L) and high dose (10 μM/L) of hypericin were added to human lymphocyte cultures and the SCE procedure was performed also there two groups. And the mean SCE values were compered. No diffrence as found between control group and the 5 μM/L hypericin added group. The mean SCE values between controls and the 10μM/L hypericin added group was found statistically significant (P<0,05). Our results, showe that hypericin may have genotoxic effect in high doses, in contrast no genotoxic effect shown in low doses.
